CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team completed its season Friday at the NCAA Championship after qualifying four wrestlers for the tournament.
Representing the Hawks at the 125-pound weight class was
Nicholas Barbaria (Scarsdale, N.Y.). He faced off against Jonathan Haas of SUNY Brockport, seeded third in the tournament. Barbaria had a tough battle against Haas, but was unable to secure the win, as he fell 7-0 in the opening round. He would take on Clarren Pestano of Central College (Iowa) in the consolation bracket, but fell to Pestano to end his tourney run.
Tyler Gazaway (New Providence, N.J.) wrestled against #4 seed Mark Choinski of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in his opening round match at 157. Unfortunately for RWU, Gazaway fell 10-0 to Choinski in his bout. He would then take on Eric Hutchinson of York, where he was able to advance to his next match against Kyle Hatch of Wabash to keep his hopes of advancing to the second day alive. It was not meant to be as Hatch earned the pin.
At 165, seventh-seeded Taylor Shay (New Milford, Conn.) began his day against Jeremy Vester of Central College (Iowa). After hard-fought battle of the first two round, Shay was able to come away with a pin late in the third to move on to Friday night. He would take on the #2 seed Lucas Jeske of Augsburg, where he could not come away with the win, falling via pin. His next opponent would be Nick Remke of Coast Guard Academy, where unfortunately he would also be pinned.
Connor Humphries (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was the fourth representer for Roger Williams, competing at 184. He squared off against Jake Ashcraft of Ithaca College, seeded second in his weight class. Humphries fared well against Ashcraft throughout most of the match but was unable to collect the win, as Ashcroft slipped past him by an 8-4 margin. Zeckary Lehman of Baldwin-Wallace College would be his next opponent. Humphries fell behind early and was not able to gain the lead as Lehman held on for the win.
