Herzog Finishes Seventh At NCAA Championships

LACROSSE, Wisc. – Roger Williams University wrestling senior Ty Herzog (Slatington, Pa.) ended his bid at the NCAA Division III National Championship in seventh place at the 157-pound weight class after going 1-1 in his second day of action.
 
Herzog began day two of competition against Nick Bova of Wabash. Bova picked up two points in the first period with a takedown on Herzog. In the second, Herzog scored an escape over Bova before being brought down by Bova. Herzog would eventually make his way back on his feet before Bova took him down again to take a 6-2 lead entering the third period.
 
In the final period, Herzog scored an early takedown, but Bova would soon escape for a 7-4 lead. Bova would then roll over into another takedown for a 9-4 lead.
 
Herzog notched an escape to pull within four (5-9), then secured a crucial takedown with 30 seconds left. Unfortunately for Herzog, Bova broke away for a point; then on the reset with 15 seconds left, he scored another takedown for the 12-7 win.
 
In the seventh place match, Herzog faced Steve Bonsall of the University of Chicago. Herzog stuck first with a takedown in the middle of the mat for a quick 2-0 lead. After a reset, Bonsall scored his first point with an escape. With about a minute left, Herzog was able to earn two more points on a takedown before another escape by Bonsall. Herzog would tally his third takeover of the period with just under 30 seconds left, eventually going into the second period with a 6-3 lead.
 
The first minute of action saw both wrestlers fighting for position until Herzog picked up two more points, bringing down Bonsall before another escape. Herzog would go into the final period holding on to an 8-4 lead.
 
Herzog started the final period on the bottom. He would eventually maneuver his way to a two-point reversal. Bonsall got away but still trailed 5-10 to Herzog. He would try multiple times to bring him down but Herzog would not budge, as he came away with the win in the seventh-place match.
