Back-to-back CCC titles for Women’s Soccer

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The #16 Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team won its second straight Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship with a 3-0 win over Gordon College Saturday afternoon.

The win for Roger Williams gives the team its sixth conference title in program history, as well as the team's sixth berth to the NCAA Tournament. In addition, the team tied

Roger Williams held possession of the ball for most of the early part of the game. The Hawks were able to secure the ball in their offensive half of the field for a majority of the early goings. However, Gordon's defense made passing the ball difficult for RWU, limiting the team's opportunities for good shots.

The 24th minute saw both teams just miss great chances to put the first score on the board. Chandler Stier (Redlands, Calif.) stole the ball off of a misplay by the Hawk defense and crossed a pass to a wide-open Jill Kefalas (Wenham, Mass.). However, Kefalas booted her shot a bit too high and over the goal.

Coming down the other way, the Hawks got a high pass into the box that bounced just out of the reach of Gordon keeper McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) and towards the middle of the box. Jodie Lavigne (Los Angeles, Calif.) was able to get to the loose ball with Dion out of position, but Gordon's Naomi Shearer (Hampden, Maine) got her body in front of Lavigne's shot to keep the game scoreless.

However, Roger Williams broke through in the 39th minute. Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) got possession of the ball on the left sideline and sent a long pass to the middle of the box to Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.). Valenti made a one-timer kick across her body and lofted the ball just over Dion to give RWU the lead.

In the second half, Roger Williams continued to control the ball for most of the period. Gordon had a few close calls, including one in the 79th minute, as Shearer headed a shot from a long free kick towards the net. The shot looked to be headed for the top of the net, but Hawk keeper Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) was able to get two hands on the ball and secure the save.

Gordon's hopes for a late comeback were dashed in the 86th minute, as the Hawks tacked on an insurance goal en route to the win. A Fighting Scot foul led to a free kick attempt for Missy Andrade (Glastonbury, Conn.). Andrade sailed her kick over the wall of defenders and hooked it just inside the right side of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) scored the final goal of the game for the Hawks in the closing seconds of the match. Jordyn Labriola (Hopkinton, Mass.) fed Woznicki a pass up the middle, leading to a long shot that bounced off the top of the crossbar and into the goal.

Martin needed only one save in the shutout win, while Dion had seven stops for Gordon in the game.

Roger Williams (19-0-3) will find out its NCAA opponent on Monday, while Gordon concludes its season at 6-9-4.
