William Smith ends Women's Soccer's NCAA run

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. — No. 3 William Smith College earned a 5-1 victory over the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team in an NCAA tournament second round match played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Herons improve to 18-1-1 and advance to the third round of the tournament.

William Smith will face No. 11 Brandeis (15-2-4) who battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie with No. 16 Amherst in their second round game this afternoon, but advanced 3-2 on penalty kicks. The Herons' third round game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 21. Official times and locations for the sectionals will be announced on NCAA.com on Monday.

The Herons have now earned 17 straight wins. The Hawks finished their season with a 20-1-3 overall record. Senior Krista Longo (Villa Walsh Academy/Morristown, N.J.), sophomore Evie Manning (St. Bedes/Lytham, England) and sophomore Kate Spiegel (Lincoln Sudbury Regional/Sudbury, Mass.) each notched a goal and an assist in the win for William Smith. First-year goalie Veronica Romines (Torrey Pines/San Diego, Calif.) started the game and made two saves and did not allow a goal in 64:20. Classmate Kaileen Murray (Kellenberg Memorial/Garden City, N.Y.) came in for the final 25:40, made three saves and allowed the lone goal.

Manning opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the season. Her unassisted tally came just 3:55 in. She carried the ball into the box and drilled her shot into the back of the net from about 16 yards out. In the 21st minute, Longo scored on a header off a corner. Spiegel earned the assist. With Longo's team-leading 14 goals this season, she is now tied for seventh on the William Smith list with Kristin Perrigo '04 with 37 career goals. Longo also ranks 10th on the Heron list with 88 career points.

Just under three minutes later, Spiegel notched a goal of her own. She took a pass from Manning at the top of the box and blasted her shot in the back of the net for her first goal of the year.

Just 4:42 into the second half, junior Kara Shue (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) made it 4-0. Classmate Brie Ruane (North Shore/Roslyn Harbor, N.Y.) sent a cross from the right side to find Shue out in front and she tapped her shot over the goal line for her seventh tally this year. Sophomore Ella McMackin (Walpole/Walpole, Mass.) made it 5-0 in the 62nd minute. Longo pushed a short pass to McMackin at the top of the box and she fired into the left side of the goal. It was McMackin's second goal this fall.

With 2:18 left in regulation, Ashlyn Dowd put the Hawks on the scoreboard. She drilled a shot just under the crossbar from about 30 yards out. It was her first goal of the season. Dowd had come inches away from scoring with 12:35 to go on a Hawks' free kick from just outside the box, sending it just under the crossbar, but Murray leapt to punch the ball out.

Roger Williams came into the game having only allowed six goals all season. Sydney Martin started in goal for the Hawks. She played 30:25, made three saves and allowed three goals. Natalie O'Donovan came in for 30:56 and made two saves and allowed the other two goals. Alexis Wright came in to play the final 28:39 and stopped three shots.

William Smith finished with a 28-11 advantage in shots and a 5-1 lead in corners. It's the first time the Herons' have advanced to the sectional round since 2013.

"We have had an amazing season, one for the record books and although we didn't win today there is so much to be thankful for, it was a journey that we will all remember and talk about for years to come," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "We can take away so many positives from this fall and todays game as well. This has been a historic season, great to be apart of and to cherish. We have done things on and off the pitch that show we deserved to play at the national level in the NCAA Tournament. We are the CCC Champions!"

"We came up against a very good team today in William Smith. I believe they will go along way in the tournament. The score line doesn't reflect the game as a whole. We battled and competed with a team who took their chances. We went out on the attack from the start and for 90 minutes, we didn't want to park the bus or just sit back and defend and play for penalties. This made it a very open game, an entertaining game for the traveling fans, it was back and forth, end-to-end stuff and we can hold our heads up high. We did not roll over or throw in the towel, maybe on another day we could have scored 5."

"We have scored in every game we played this season, we knew we would score but it took us a little bit longer than we had hoped. However, it was worth the wait and a spectacular goal it was too! It was something for Ashlyn to remember for a very long time, just like Raleigh's goal yesterday. Kristen Knight will remember scoring the game winner yesterday, so it was worth the trip and play against one of the best programs in the country, which is what the National Tournament is all about for us."

"We tried to play, to pass and move like we have all season, but 2 games in 2 days on a grass pitch we think may have got the better of us, to with a 7 hour bus ride, we would have liked to have played them at our house, in our soccer stadium, our turf, perhaps in the future. We had our share of opportunities in front of goal, more than a few quality chances this afternoon, we got into some good positions and made them work hard for the win. We gave their keeper a work out as well. We learned a lot about ourselves and it showed we are on the right path and have players who want to compete at this level all the time, want to improve and we will continue to do this next season starting tomorrow and in the spring."

"We will graduate 5 seniors who have given everything to the program and they will be missed but we believe the returning players are in good place, they gained more valuable experience and will want to continue the tradition we have created during the last 5 years here at RWU. If we look back and reflect on this season we have a lot of things we can be very proud about."

"We have had a lot of outstanding individual success, awards and recognition, great saves, awesome goals, but the team's overall performance makes it a season to remember. The team won 20 games for the first time ever, we went undefeated in the regular season and beat some quality programs in the process.
What a ride…It is a shame it is all over for another year…this experience has only given us a taste for more!"
