BRISTOL, R.I. – For the first time since 2012, the Roger Williams University Men's and Women's Track & Field teams both claimed the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship.
Both teams won the championship by double digits, as the men's team won over second place Gordon by 21 points, and the women's team beat favorite Salve Regina by 15 points.
On the men's side, Ryan Rotondo (Cranston, R.I.) has a strong showing for the Hawks, winning the 100 Meter Dash in 11.56 and placing second in 200 Meter Dash at 23.64, just 0.05 seconds from winning the event. Ben Lane (Groveland, Mass.) picked up a win in the 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:01.21, while Doug Sasso (Watertown, Conn.) placed second in the 1500 Meter Run (4:17.67).
Jack Ferguson (Bethel, Conn.) set a new school record in the 5000 Meter Run, winning the event with a time of 15:35.67. John Marzocca (Jefferson, N.J.) also picked up a win for RWU, taking first in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.70 meters.
Ian Mitchell (West Newbury, Mass.) had a big day for the Hawks, winning three events for RWU on the afternoon. He claimed the top spot in the 110 Meter Hurdles (17.07), the High Jump (1.72m), and the Triple Jump (12.17m).
For the women, Hannah Zydanowicz (Newington, Conn.) earned two wins for the Hawks on the day, winning the 1500 Meter Run in 5:03:04 and the 5000 Meter Run in 18:51.71. Megan Breault (Agawam, Mass.) took the top spot in the 100 Meter Hurdles (17.43) and Triple Jump (9.51m) while also taking second in the Long Jump at 4.58m.
Sarah Link (Blossvale, N.Y.) won the 400 Meter Hurdles in 1:12.49 and finished second in the High Jump (1.37m) to teammate Alyssa Burton (Avon, Conn.), who won with a height of 1.42m. Rebecca Evensen (New Canaan, Conn.) finished in first in the Discus Throw with a distance of 26.74m.
Jamie Wandzilak (Wantagh, N.Y.) finished runner-up in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 13:35.10.
