Wrestling concludes season at the NCAA DIII National Championship

Welch and Crowell earn All American Honors

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team finished 26th at the Division III NCAA Championships and two athletes earn All-American honors. 

Three Hawks qualified and traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to compete including 165lb. senior Colin Crowell (Hampstead, N.H.), 184lb. sophomore David Welch (Salem, N.H.), and 197lb. Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.).

This was Parcel's second trip to the National Championship qualifying last year at 184lbs.  In this years 197 lb. bracket Parcel opened with a loss to the fourth seed Joe Giaramita of SUNY-Cortland.  In the Wrestlebacks Bracket Parcel pinned Christian Psomas of Ursinus at 1:18 to before dropping an 11-5 decision to end Paul Glover of Brockport State that ended his tournament.

Welch entered the 184 lb. bracket as the 4th seed but dropped his first round matched up with Christoper Chorzepa of Williams College which sent him to Wrestlebacks Bracket.  There he earned 6-0 decision over Thomas Reyhons of Augsburg, next he took a 3-1 decision over David Dibenedetto of Washington and Jefferson.  In the next round he met a familiar foe in Southern Maine's Jonathan Deupree for their fourth meeting this year.  Welch earned a 3-1 decision to revenge his regional championship loss before dropping his next bout to Ryan Sheldon of Coe.  The loss to Sheldon placed Welch in the 7th place match versus Eric Twohey of Wisconsin-La Crosse who he pinned at 4:54.  His 7th place finish earned Welch All-American Honors.

Crowell entered his fourth NCAA championship at 165 lb. unseeded. In his opening session Crowell won a 15-7 decision over Tommy Desir of King College.  In the second round he met #1 seed Chris Burdge of Centinary which dropped him to the Wrestlebacks Bracket.  Crowell took a 7-5 decision over Jake Krogstad of Concordia-Moorhead to advance to the round of eight.  Crowell would lose his next match to the 4th seed Cedric Gibson of Wisconsin-Whitewater and his final match with Stephen Aiello of Wheaton (IL) to which earned him the 8th place finish and All America Honors.
