Wrestling controls Norwich

 BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Wrestling team controls the Cadets of Norwich UNiversity 38-7.  The #13 ranked Hawks improve to 3-0 overall while the Cadets drop to 0-4.

In the 125 lbs. match Matt Elias (Madison, Conn.) of RWU made quick work of Chase Jefferys (Topsfield, Mass.) of Norwich earning fall in :21 of the first period.

At 133 lbs. contest Dan Roger (Londonberry, N.H.) and Alex Stewart (Ellicott City, Md.) put nine points on the board in the first period with Stewart taking 6-3 advantage.  Both wrestlers continued to score with the second period ending 9-6.  Stewart continued to control the third period to finish the match at 14-6.

141 lbs. Justin Cochran (Paramus, N.J.) took the quick advantage with a pair of takedown before James Duncan (Brewster, N.Y.) picked up a reversal and an escape.  The pair exchanged points to bring the first period to an end at 5-5.  In the second period Cochran turned his top starting position into a cradle that spread that changed the momentum and brought the score to 10-5.  Cochran stayed on the attack and earned a quick takedown but could not secure the major decision.

RWU Thomas Carta (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) was first to score with a shot to the legs that resulted in a takedown on Michael Burkeen (Prescott, Ariz.). Burkeen countered with an escape and the Period ended at 2-1.  The second period began with Carta choosing to start down picking up an escape and a takedown with the period ending 5-1.  Burkeen choose the bottom to start the third but was lifted by Carta who earned back points and a decisive advantage in riding time.  Carta keep the pace high work and shooting to finish the match at 10-3.

157lbs. Ty Herzog (Slatington, Pa.) opened quickly for the Hawks with two take downs in the first 30 seconds of the match with Ben Swanson (Little Silver, N.J.).  Swanson somehow escaped a locked up cradle to earn his first point that brought the first period to a close at 4-1.  Herzog open the second with another quick take down that turned into a scramble and a reversal for Swanson that ended the period 8-5.  Herzog added another takedown in the third period to take a 10-5 advantage.  Herzog continued to dominate in the scrambles ending the match with a pin in the third.

Joshua Devriendt (Goffstown, N.H.) was first to score with a takedown of Zachary Gibson (Lithopolis, Ohio) in 165lbs. contest.  Gibson picked up a point on the escape and turned it into a front headlock that ended in stalemate.  The first period ended at 2-1 and set the tone for a low scoring defensive battle.  In the second period Gibson turned the tide in riding time.  Devriendt gave up an escape from the top starting position that tied the contest at 2-2.  With the match coming to close and riding time if favor of Gibson, Devriendt took a final shot that did not reult in points.

At 174lbs. Dan Ressler (Hillsdale, N.J.) jumped out to quick advantage 6-1 advantage on David Rogers (Hudson, Mass.) before turning a cradle into a pin at the first period.

Cole Boone (Newport, N.H.) was first on the board in the 184 lbs. with a takedown before Chris Cornwell (East Greenville, Pa.) executed his signature hot dog move to finish the contest with a pin.  
    
David Welch (Salem, N.H.) took the early advantage over Saetyre McDowell (Fayetteville, N.C.) in 197 lbs. event with a takedown.  Welch earned his third point on an escape out of restart and followed up with two more on a take down.  Welch added another two point with a snap down that spread the gap to 7-1 before end of the second period.  The third period began with escape by McDowell which allowed for another Welch takedown bringing the score to 9-3.  Welch picked up two more takedowns in the last minute of the third period and earned one more point for riding time to bring the final score to 14-4.

Kyle Foster (Somers, Conn) and Steve Maldonado (Nyack, N.Y.) squared off in the 285 lbs. match.  Foster grabbed the first points of the contest with take down with 30 seconds left in the first.  The second period began with Foster starting down and picking up his third point with the escape at 1:30 in the second period.  Foster finished on attack with a take down and back points that spread the match to 7-0 and put the contest out of reach. Foster would finish with 10-0 advantage to earn a major decision.

The Hawks return to mat on Saturday, December 13 at 11:00 a.m to take on Merchant Marine in Kings Point, N.Y. and Norwich will take on Daniel Webster at home on Dec. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
