Wrestling takes down the Coast Guard Academy

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Bears gave the Hawks all they could handle but in the end Coast Guard lost to 13th ranked Roger Williams by a score of 23-18.  With the win the 13th ranked Hawks, stay undefeated on the year and lift their record to 2-0 on the season.

Roger Williams started off the match with an 8-4 decision by freshman Nicholas Barbaria over freshman Dominick Summers at 125 pounds.


Coast Guards Nate Giorgio pinned Dan Roger in one minute three seconds giving the Bears a 6-3 lead early on.

The Hawks tied up the match at six when freshman Justin Cochran defeated sophomore Matt McAllister by a decision of 6-2.

In the 149 pound match sophomore Danny Downes gained another win for Roger Williams as he registered a 16-3 major decision for the Hawks.

Sullivan brought the momentum back to Coast Guard as he was losing 8-3 to sophomore Ty Herzog until he scored a reversal and then pinned Herzog 4:50 in the 157 pound match giving the Bears a 12-10 advantage.

Palomba followed Sullivan's lead in the 165 pound match pinning freshman Peter Hilburn at the 2:38 mark pushing Coast Guard's lead to 18-10.

In the closest match of the night Roger Williams sophomore Alec Golner squeaked out a decision against sophomore Dan Fiorvanti 6-5 at 174 pounds.

Hawks sophomore Joe Albina cut in the Bear's lead earning a 7-5 decision against junior Marc Wagner at 184 pounds narrowing the Coast Guard's lead to 18-16.

Roger Williams junior David Welch scored a major decision at 197 pounds against sophomore Phil Azzari by a score of 10-2 snatching the lead back from the Bear's for good at 20-18. Welch is currently ranked number one in New England and fifth in the nation at 197 pounds.

Hawk's sophomore Kyle Foster finished up the night by earning a decision against senior Mark Howard by a score of 7-3 at 285 pounds and giving Roger Williams a 23-18 win over the Bears.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday, December 6th when they travel to the York Invitational in York Pennsylvania. Matches will begin at 9:00 am.
