Sailing competes at Men’s Singlehanded Nationals on weekend

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team traveled this past weekend to compete in three regattas, most notably at the ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship.

At Men's Singlehanded Nationals, hosted by Western Washington, Roger Williams' Martim Anderson (Lisbon, Portugal) placed 13th, finishing with an overall score of 65. He opened with a tenth place finish in the opening race, but came back with a sixth-place finish in his second race. However, Anderson was unable to place better than tenth over his final four races.

In the 3rd Annual Sister Esther Open, hosted by Salve Regina University, the Hawks finished strong in sixth place out of the 19-team field. At A Division, Scott Booth (Milford, Conn.) and Michael McBrien (East Patchogue, N.Y.) collaborated together to post a score of 99, good for fourth place. Booth and McBrien earned fourth place or better in eight of their races including three consecutive wins. In B Division, RWU finished in 10th place, with Jonathan Pope (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and Beatrice Bellacosa (Winchester, Mass.) racing for the Hawks. Pope and Bellacosa finished with seven top-six races with their best finish a third-place result.

At the Hap Moore Team Race this past weekend, hosted by Coast Guard, the Hawks finished in seventh place. Connor Corgard (Coon Rapids, Minn.), Henry Vogel (Jamestown, R.I.), Mackenzie Bryan (Christiansted, USVI), Dirk Johnson (Middletown, R.I.), Wendy Reuss (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.), Breanne Baldino (Carlsbad, Calif.), and Abby Preston (Newport, R.I.) competed for the Hawks and finished with a record of 6-5 in the single round robin.
