Sailing grabs fourth at NE Dinghy Championship

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team completed another eventful weekend as the Hawks competed in four different regattas, including a fourth-place finish at the New England Dinghy Championship at Brown University and earning a berth to the ICSA National Semi-finals.

During the Dinghy Championship, the Hawks had a combined score of 213 points, coming only 19 points away from a third-place finish.  During the 18-team event, Roger Williams topped the A Division, featuring three first-place finishes to beat out Tufts University by one point with an overall score of 69 points.  At the B Division, the Hawks combined for a score of 144 with four top-five finishes, placing tenth in the division.  Racing for the Hawks in A Division were Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI), Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.), and Jake Bartlein (Santa Barbara, Calif.).  Representing the team in B Division were Tyler MacDonald (Newport Beach, Calif.), Bianca Rom (Amityville, N.Y.), and Alexander Rudkin (Middletown, R.I.).

At the Oberg Trophy Race hosted by Northeastern University, RWU had a combined score of 146 points en route to a fourth-place showing.  In A division, the Hawks earned a fourth-place finish with a combined score of 63 points, while B division came away with an eighth place finish scoring 83.  Racing for Roger Williams in the A Division were Connor Needham (Shelter Island, N.Y.) and Dan Goldman (Bradenton, Fla.).  In B division, Connor Brady (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Jaye Fahey (Keyport, N.J.) sailed for the Hawks.

Roger Williams also participated in the Central Series Regatta hosted by Boston College.  The Hawks tallied a combined score of 222, earning them a fifth-place finish.  In A Division, Roger Williams was led by Cole Rice (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Chelsea Maguire (Duxbury, Mass.) who sailed to an eighth-place score of 101.  RWU was represented by Campbell Duffy (Warwick, Bermuda) and Jack Hunger (Rocky River, Ohio) in B division who earn a tenth-place finish with 121 points.

At the Emily Wick Trophy Race, the Hawks finished 10th out of the 18 participating teams.  In the A Division, the Hawks raced to a score of 162, while in B Division the Hawks scored 117.  RWU was represented by Annie Schmidt (Larkspur, Calif.) and Breanne Baldino (Carlsbad, Calif.), while Haley Powell (St. George, Bermuda) and Rachel Perry (Tampa, Fla.) were sent to the water for the B Division.    

The Hawks will be back on the water this weekend, including hosting the Staake Trophy on Saturday and Sunday.
