Wrestling Clinches Pilgrim League Championship

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling Team clinched the Pilgrim League Championship with 19-18 victory over the Anchorman of Rhode Island College (RIC).

The Hawks improve to 17-7 overall and remain a perfect 5-0 in the Pilgrim League while the Anchormen fall to 11-15 overall and 4-1 in the Pilgrim League.

Mike Sugermeyer (Hampden, Mass.) posted the first points in the match for RIC with a 5-4 decision in the 125 lb match that gave the Anchorman a 3-0 lead. Dante Porrazzo (East Hanover, NJ) answered for the Hawks at 133 lbs. earning an injury default that put the RWU back on top 6-3. Ricondo Cole (Cranston R.I.) evened the score for RIC with a 9-4 victory in the 141 lb contest. Alex LaBeef kept the momentum with RIC in 149 lb. bout with an 11-7 victory that put the Anchorman up 9-6 in the team score. RWU's Dan Ressler (Hillsdale, N.J.) took the 157 lbs. match 8-4 to bring the Hawks back to even in the team score. Collin Crowell (Hampstead, N.H.) gave the Hawks a little breathing room by earning a major decision at 165 lbs. that put the Hawks up by four. Robert Sotelo (Little Falls, N.J.) put the Anchorman back in striking distance with a 6-2 decision at 174 lb. match that put the score at 13-12. David Welch (Salem, N.H.) grabbed the 184 lb. victory for the Hawks with an 8-2 decision pushing the lead to 16-12. In the 197 lb match Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) clinched the team victory for RWU with a 7-0 shut out that put the Hawks up 19-12. The 285 lb. match was forfeited by RWU to gain a one point victory in the team score.
