Sailing remains in third place at Coed Dinghy Nationals

AUSTIN, Texas – At the end of the second day of the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship, the Roger Williams University Sailing team holds on to third place among the 18-team fleet.

The day got off to a slow start, due to thunderstorm threats and not enough wind to go sailing. The racing was postponed in the morning until about 11:30 a.m. when A-division hit the water with 6-8 knots from the northeast; the temperature was around 80 degrees. A-division was able to sail two races on flat water, however, by the time it was B-division's turn to rotate in, the wind had died out and racing was postponed again.

After a false alarm where it looked like breeze would fill in around 2 p.m. and the boats started to head out, the race committee raised another postponement flag. Around 3:45 p.m. the wind looked promising and the B-division fleet headed out to start racing around 4 p.m.

The wind was coming from the north around 8-12 knots at the start of race 7B. The race committee was able to run eight races total today, four in both A and B-divisions on a W4 course. The wind continued to fluctuate and the conditions were shifty, as they have been over the last week of competition.

The first race of the day saw A Division finish in 15th, with B Division taking eighth place. Those results saw the Hawks drop to fourth place, two points ahead of the College of Charleston. RWU would come back with a seventh-place result in A Division along with a fifth-place finish at B Division. Combined with a 15-12 by Charleston in the race, the Hawks leapfrogged over the Cougars to move into a tie for second with Yale University with 117 points.

A Division wrapped up the final two races by taking fifth and sixth, while B Division placed ninth and fifth to stay in third overall. The Hawks currently hold an 11-point lead over Charleston, but trail Yale by eight points for second. Georgetown University remains in first place with 104 points.

Tomorrow will be the last day of racing for the ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship. Competitors report at 9 a.m. and racing will begin around 10 a.m. Tomorrow has a 5 p.m. deadline for racing; no race can be started after 5 p.m.
