Sailing qualifies for Dinghy Race Nationals

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team finished in second place at the ICSA National Championship Eastern Semifinals, earning one of 18 spots in the Gill/ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championship in June.

The Hawks finished the weekend with 135 points, 15 shy of Eastern Semifinal winner Georgetown University. In the Western Semifinal, the University of Miami claimed the other top spot.

At A Division, Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI), Tyler Wilson (Woodville, Mass.), and Sophie Bellacosa (Winchester, Mass.) piloted the Hawks to a win in the division with 66 points. The trio finished seventh or better in every race but two, with wins in five separate races including back-to-back-to-back wins in races 10 through 12.

At B Division, Sean Bouchard (Bermuda) and RWU Female Athlete of the Year Kelly Stannard (Salem, Mass.) combined for a fourth-place effort with 69 points. Similar to the team at A Division, Bouchard and Stannard placed no lower than seventh in 12 of the 14 races. The two won the second and 13th races while finishing as runners-up in races six and nine.

Roger Williams travel down to Texas on June 6-8 for the Gill/ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championship and look to improve upon last year's sixth-place finish.
