WORCESTER, Mass. - Brandon Shenan (Ocean, N.Y.) and Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.) registered early pins to lift the Roger Williams University Wrestling team to a 30-18 road victory over WPI in a New England Wrestling Association meeting on Wednesday evening.
Shenan began the match with a second period pin at 157 pounds. Teammate Collin Crowell (Hampstead, N.H.) quickly followed with a 18-1 tech fall at 4:02 to push the Hawks lead to 11-0.
Alex Freilich (Worcester, Mass.) dented the scoring column for the host with a first period pin at 174 pounds. The sophomore, ranked No.2 in New England is 14-3 on the season, remains on defeated in 2012. RWU quickly countered with a first period pin from second-ranked Parcal at 184 and a 7-3 decision by Colin Egan (Wall, N.J.) at 197.
The Engineers made things interesting by slicing the Hawk advantage to 23-18 with pins by Joseph Szerszunowicz (Milford, Mass.) at heavyweight and Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, Conn.) at 133 sandwiched between a Roger Williams win by decision (8-3) from Anthony D'Anton (Toms Rivers, N.J.) at 125. The visitors secured the victory by receiving a win by decision from No. 8 James Carroll (Needham, Mass.) and a major decision by No.6 Conor Hayes (Old Bridge, N.J.) at 141 and 149 respectively.
"The team did a great job today,” said Co-Head Coach Jon Egan. “We were missing some of our starters so it was great to have some of our guys step up and deliver big wins today. Hopefully the trend continues in the final three weeks of the season."
WPI concludes the 2011-12 regular season on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. trip to Northfield, Vt. to face Norwich. Roger Williams is back in action at 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon at Division I Brown.
