BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Swimming & Diving team began 2012 with a 170-117 win over the University of New England Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks won nine events at the meet, beginning with a win in the 200 Yard Medley Relay by Christine Vertullo (Speonk, N.Y.), Ursula Nickerson (Torrington, Conn.), Jacqui Cohen (Commack, N.Y.), and Kristen Grandonico (Portland, Maine) with a time of 2:01.32. Lauren Marchese (Hillsborough, N.J.) followed that up with a win in the 1650 Yard Freestyle, coming in with a time of 19:51.65.
Grandonico also earned two more wins on the day with a victory in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, finishing in 1:12.27, and another win in the 500 Yard Freestyle at 5:38.44. Alana Mercurio (Hope, R.I.) took home a pair of wins for the Hawks as well. She placed first in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:21.50 and later won the 200 Yard Butterfly, coming in with a time of 2:24.27.
In the diving events, Laura Folsom (Simsbury, Conn.) won the 1-Meter Dive, totaling 207.90 points. Brittany Bouffard (Bristol, Conn.) took the top place in the 3-Meter Dive with 161.65 points.
Roger Williams (3-4) travels to take on Connecticut College on Tuesday.
