MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The College of New Jersey eliminated the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team from the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 win Saturday afternoon on the neutral campus of Middlebury College.
Brittany McGinley scored her team-leading 13th and 14th goals of the season to lead TCNJ to the win. The Lions advance to take on Middlebury, a 2-0 winner over Lasell, in the regional final on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
TCNJ had a golden opportunity in the 13th minute as McGinley was in a footrace to the ball with Roger Williams' keeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.). McGinley won the race and got a shot off, but the ball hit the right post and squirted free. The Lions threatened again with a one-touch by Amy Van Dyk going just wide in the 33rd minute.
TCNJ got on the board a few minutes later, when McGinley scored on a rebound. Van Dyk's original rocket from the outside was stopped by a diving save from Jaques, with the rebound coming right to McGinley, who blasted it home from 15 yards away.
Leading 1-0 early in the second half, McGinley was looking for her second goal as she headed a throw-in by Allyson Anderson, but the shot was cleared from the goal by a header by a Hawk defender. Two minutes later, Korrie Harkins beat Jaques with a shot to the short side, but the ball hit the far post.
Roger Williams threatened in the 58th minute, with Lion keeper Cristina Gacos making a diving save on a free kick by Maddy Howard (Medfield, Mass.). The ensuing corner kick was cut off by Gacos to thwart another scoring opportunity.
The Lions made it a 2-0 game at 62:21 when Sloan DePiero headed in a nice feed from Anderson for her third of the season. McGinely netted her second of the game at 81:12, quickly one-touching a shot into the net from close-range, after a short lofting pass from Lauren Giles.
Roger Williams nearly broke up the shutout with three minutes remaining, with an open look from Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.) sailing just high over the crossbar.
Gacos finished the game with a pair of saves to earn her tenth shutout of the season, while Jaques made eight stops for Roger Williams.
Roger Williams concludes the season with an overall record of 14-7-1.
