BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team hosted #21 Elizabethtown College Friday evening in the campus Recreation Center following Elizabethtown's 40-3 triumph over the University of Southern Maine. RWU earned two wins-by-fall, but the Blue Jays emerged victorious by the score of 30-12.
Elizabethtown jumped out to a big lead after winning each of the first five bouts, including a forfeit win at 133 and a technical fall victory at 149. Hawks junior Kyle D'Urso (Londonderry, N.H.) nearly posted three points for RWU at 157, but Blue Jays sophomore Zack Sheridan (Acme, Pa.) earned a takedown with eight seconds remaining in the match to take the 5-4 win.
At 165, RWU sophomore Michael Monson (Southington, Conn.) needed just two minutes to put RWU on the board, as he registered the first win-by-fall on the night.
After Julian Meaney (toms River, N.J.) recorded a 13-5 win at 174, RWU sophomore Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) registered a second win-by-fall for the Hawks, this one coming at 6:35.
The Blue Jays finished strong as Phil Landis (Wrightsville, Pa.) earned a 15-3 Major Decision win before heavyweight Tim Katzaman (Wyomissing, Pa.) defeated sixth-ranked Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.), 8-2.
RWU, Elizabethtown and USM all return to the Recreation Center Saturday for the annual Scott Viera Invitational Tournament featuring nine teams beginning battle at 10 a.m.
