BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team finished fourth at the Fowle Trophy/New England Team Racing Championships, with four sailors on the team earning All-NEISA honors for their effort on the year.
Four Hawks were named to the All-New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association team, highlighted by freshman Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI) earning 2010 NEISA Rookie of the Year. Sophomore Kelly Stannard (Salem, Conn.) was recognized as one of nine sailors as All-NEISA First Team Crew, while Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) received All-NEISA First Team Skipper honors. Rounding out the accolades was freshman Sean Bouchard (Bermuda), who earned All-NEISA Second Team Skipper honors.
At the Fowle Trophy/New England Team Racing Championships, hosted by Salve Regina University, the Hawks narrowly missed earning a berth to the ICSA Team Racing National Championship in June. Roger Williams ultimately finished fourth after losing a tie-breaker for third place to Tufts University.
The Hawks began the championships with a 3-2 record in the Group B Round Robin, earning wins over Boston University, Salve Regina, and MIT and a berth to the Gold Round Robin. There, RWU would compile a 4-3 record with victories over Harvard, BU, Boston College, and Vermont, putting them in a tie for second and advancing to the final six. Facing off against BU, Tufts, Yale, Brown and BC, the Hawks came away with three wins out of the group, tying them with Yale for third place and the final berth to the ICSA Nationals. Yale eventually won the tie-breaker and the berth.
Roger Williams will be on hiatus for the next three weeks as the team prepares for the Coed Dinghy Nationals on June 1-3, hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
