Win at the Thompson highlights weekend for Sailing

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Sailing enjoyed a successful weekend of regattas. The Hawks placed first in the Thompson Trophy Regatta on Sunday, and enjoyed many more achievements throughout the weekend.

RWU placed first in the ICSA Thompson Trophy regatta, hosted by the Coast Guard Academy. The Hawks received 63 points in the A Division and 100 Points in the B Division for a combined total of 163, pushing them into first place out of 18 teams. There would be tough conditions on Saturday for the sailors as a strong northerly wind died down. Yet this would not discourage junior Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) and sophomore Kelly Stannard (Salem, Conn.), who finished second in the A Division, posting a strong performance for the Hawks, helping aid the win. Freshman Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI) and classmate Sophia Bellacosa (Winchester, Mass.) finished 6th out of 18 teams in the B Division. Together, these would be enough for RWU to capture the trophy.

Continuing the weekend, RWU hosted the Staake Trophy, where the Hawks finished 4th out of 8 teams, going 10-7 in the weekend, where a total of 42 races were sailed. The University of Rhode Island finished first, while Boston University qualified for the NE Team Race Championships.

Along with two strong showings in the Thompson Trophy and Staake Trophy Regatta's, eighteen teams converged at the US Merchant Marine Academy for the Admiral's Cup Regatta. The Hawks placed 12th out of 18 teams. Seniors Bjarki Gunnarsson (River Vale, N.J.) and Andrew Vachon (Scituate, Mass.) would finish 11th in the A Division, while teammates Josh Saltmarsh (Wayland, Mass.) and Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.) finished 6th in the B Division. #Eric Schwarm# (Freeport, Maine) closed out the regatta finishing 12th in the C Division.

Ending the weekend, two RWU freshmen competed in the 70th New England Frosh Single Division Championships, Priddy Trophy at Massachusetts Maritime. Saturday's weather was ideal, allowing Haley Powell (St. George, Bermuda) and Elizabeth Teague (Bayport, N.Y.) to finish 7th overall out of 13 teams.

The Hawks look to get back into action this weekend, highlighted in their attempt to qualify for the ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championships by racing in the ICSA Semi-Finals in Seattle.
