WENHAM, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Men’s Tennis team ended their regular season with a perfect record (11-0) in The Commonwealth Coast Conference after an 8-1 win over Gordon College on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks swept all six single matches, losing only one set. In doubles play, RWU dropped one match to place Gordon on the board.
Dan Kleitz (Wethersfield, Conn.) defeated his opponent, Eric Musser, in the #3 singles match with a perfect sweep of 6-0, 6-0. Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) dropped two points in the # 1 singles match against Gary Gaudio, but came back with a sweep in the second set, winning 6-2, 6-0. David Lange (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn.) both took 6-2, 6-2 wins over their opponents at #2 and #4, while Nate Rohman (Topsham, Maine) grabbed a 6-2, 6-1 victory at #6.
The #1 and #3 doubles also took victories for RWU, with 8-4 wins over their opponents. Erikson and Nicholas Hawvermale (Bethlehem, Conn.) defeated Gaudio and Carl Quinion in the #1 doubles match while DeNunzio and Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.) defeated Eric Musser and Andrew Van Rheenen. The # 2 doubles team of Rohman and Baker were not as successful, dropping the match (8-5) to Nate Musser and Evan Williamson.
The Hawks claimed the number 1 seed in the playoff tournament and will host the # 8 seed Curry College on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
