NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. The Roger Williams University Men’s Track & Field team clinched a fifth-place performance Saturday afternoon at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Invitational.

Sophomore captain Donovan Currier (Burlington, Vt.) and freshman Emil Pornelos (Hartford, Conn.) led the Hawks in throwing competition, combining for 20 team points.  Adding another chapter to his impressive freshman season, Pornelos led the scoring with 12 points by placing third in both the Shot Put and Discus Throw.  He also hurled the Javelin a season-best with a mark of 133’ 3”.

Currier had his best meet of the season with a breakout performance in the Discus Throw, heaving the platter 121’ 11” en route to a second-place finish. The toss, thirty-six feet farther than his best from last year, propelled him to the number three spot in the conference.

“No one works harder than Don,” said throws and sprints coach Tom Conley. “It’s unusual to see leaps in performance like he’s had this year and its testament to his dedication and work ethic,”

Another thrower, Matt Furman (Westchester, N.Y.) had his best day of the season in the hammer throw with a personal best of 107’ 4”, good for 8th place.

Sophomore decathlete Jamie Goodwick (Newtown, Conn.) had an impressive day using the meet as a tune-up for next week’s Holy Cross decathlon.  The versatile Hawk captain ran a personal best in the 110m high hurdles with a 17.20 effort.  He also scored for RWU, placing second in the Pole Vault, sixth in the Long Jump, seventh in the High Jump, and ran the anchor leg on the 4x100-Meter relay squad for a total of 14 points.

The 4x100 relay also featuring Greg Parzych (Coventry, Conn.), Bobby Decrescenzo (Stoneham, Mass.), and Eric Patnode (East Longmeadow, Mass.) grabbed four points with a 4th place finish and season-best time of 46.20 seconds.

Other solid performances from the Hawks included a third-place finish in the Triple Jump for Evan Jones (Lexington, Mass.) with a distance of 41’ 1.5” and a fourth-place showing by Matt Carney (Canton, Mass.) in the 5000-Meter Run, running in the event for the first time this year and clocking in at 17:34.

Roger Williams heads to the Silfen Invitational this Saturday, hosted by Connecticut College.
