DEDHAM, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Men’s Track & Field team competed in the Husky Spring Open on Saturday. The Hawks boasted a strong performance in their first meet of the season while competing against teams from Divisions I, II, and III.
Sophomore Zach Gillespie (New Preston, Conn.) had one of the best showings on the day for the Hawks, finishing 3rd in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.21 and qualifying for the New England Championships in April.
Another strong performance was capped off by sophomore Evan Jones (Lexington, Mass.), who took fifth place in the triple jump with a distance of 12.60 meters.
Junior co-captain Jonathan Ellis (Yonkers, N.Y.) also performed well for RWU, finishing 11th out of 36 in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.76.
Freshman Eric Patnode (East Longmeadow, Mass.) finished 13 out of 46 in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.87, while sophomore Jamie Goodwick (Newtown, Conn.) finished 19th out of 44 in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.96.
"Overall, it was a great opening meet for both teams,” said Head Coach Sean Livingston. “There were many Division I and II schools and our guys more than held their own. Though we are such a young team, we are way ahead of where we were last year at this time. We couldn't have asked for a better start to the season.”
The Hawks look to continue their success this season on Saturday at the Jerry Gravel Classic at 10:00 a.m.
