Softball splits on second day of Spring Break

CAPE CORAL, Fla.On the second day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, the Roger Williams University Softball split another twinbill, falling 2-7 to The College of Wooster before defeating Smith College 2-1.

Wooster scored a run in the first and second innings and maintained its slim 2-0 over the remainder of the game. Solid pitching by the Scots stifled the Hawk offense, as RWU was held to only three hits over the first six innings of play.

In the top of the seventh, Wooster's offense exploded for five runs off of six hits in the inning to mount a 7-0 advantage over the Hawks. In RWU's final frame, the team finally got on the scoreboard via a two-out, two-RBI double by senior Melissa Sereti (Shrewsbury, Mass.), sending in senior Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and sophomore Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.). Those would be only runs RWU would score, as the Hawks were retired in the next at bat to end the game.

Sophomore Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.) took the loss, allowing all seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits in seven innings. Burke offensively finished with two hits and a run in three at-bats.

In the second game, the Hawks were locked in a pitcher's duel with Smith, as sophomore Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Tessa Clark (Calais, Maine) held the opposing team scoreless over the first three innings. Smith would get on the board first in the bottom of the fourth off of junior Salma Mehter's (Seattle, Wash.) RBI double.

The Hawks responded in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI single by sophomore Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) to take a 2-1 lead. RWU would hold on to the lead after freshman Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) came on in the bottom of the fifth and tossed three scoreless innings to pick up her first collegiate save.

Doolin's line ended up with one run and four strikeouts in four innings, while Marcin only allowed one hit with two Ks in her relief effort. Junior Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) and senior Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.) each had two hits in the game.

Roger Williams (2-2) takes on Lasell College and the University of Scranton Wednesday afternoon.
