Sailing on the road for Spring Training

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Sailing team hit the road this past weekend down in Maryland and up in Massachusetts to take part in the St. Mary's team race and the Team Race at MIT.

At MIT, the Hawks had their best showing of the spring with a second-place finish among the six teams. Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI), Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.), Joshua Saltmarsh (Wayland, Mass.), Sophie Bellacosa (Winchester, Mass.), Bjarki Gunnarsson (River Vale, N.J.), Andrew Vachon (Scituate, Mass.), Megan Place (Wilton Manor, Fla.), and Ryan McHorney (Southboro, Mass.) combined for a perfect 5-0 record in each of the three round robins to lock up a top-two result. In the final sailoff between the Hawks and Tufts University, the Jumbo took two of the three races to come away with the regatta victory.

At the St. Mary's Team Race, the Hawks finished 5-4 to take fifth place overall out of ten teams at the regatta. RWU picked up wins over the College of Charleston, Connecticut College, Old Dominion University, St. Mary's College, and the University of Vermont in the round robin format. Over the two-day event, 46 races were sailed, with 21 on the first day and 25 on the second. Boston College ultimately won the regatta, after an 8-1 performance over the other nine teams, falling only to Georgetown University.

The Hawks will enjoy the remainder of Spring Break before returning back to campus and getting back on the water on the weekend of March 26-27.
