VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Baseball dropped its third straight game Monday afternoon, this time to Fontbonne University at the 2010 RussMatt Baseball Invitational, as the Hawks fell by a 9-19 score.
The Fontbonne offense was potent throughout the game, putting up at least one run in every inning but the top of the ninth. The Griffins had put ten runs on the board by the end of the fifth inning before tacking on three runs in each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
Trailing by one, the Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by senior Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.), scoring sophomore Tim Georgen (Bristol, Conn.). Yet the Griffins would add two runs in both the second and third innings to take a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Hawks cut the gap to two on another RBI single by Bolin and a two-RBI double by junior Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.). Fontbonne responded with four runs in the following frame to go up 9-3. Roger Williams would add a run in each of the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, but the Griffins outscored RWU 10-2 over that stretch to put the Hawks in a deep hole.
The bottom of the ninth saw the Hawks mount a late rally, in which junior Brian Jackson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman Rob Zarthar (Dedham, Mass.) scored with one out. Fontbonne would og on to retire the next wo batters to earn the win.
Sophomore Sean Scanlon (Lebanon, Conn.) was tagged for nine runs off 12 hits in four innings of work in the setback. Offensively, Bolin finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run. Freshman John Oppenhimer (Westport, Conn.) was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Roger Williams (1-3) has Tuesday and Wednesday off and will face Worcester State College Thursday in a 1:30 doubleheader.
