Two Wrestlers earn Academic All-American; Team GPA ranks 14th nationally

BRISTOL, R.I. – For the ninth time in the last 10 seasons, the RWU Wrestling Team has finished with its cumulative GPA ranking among the top 25 in the nation, while junior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) and sophomore Kevin Edward (Bayport, N.Y.) were selected as Academic All-Americans.

The team combined for a 3.276 cumulative GPA, ranking 14th among all NCAA Division III wrestling programs. The ranking is among the highest ever for the Hawks with the 2002-03 team remaining the highest ranked team in program history, finish 11th in the nation.

The wrestling program now boasts 25 Academic All-Americans in its history. This is the first such honor for both Cambi and Edward. Both wrestlers also performed well on the mat while succeeding in the classroom.

Cambi, studying Business Management, ranked eighth nationally in the 197 weight class for a majority of the season. He twice earned RWU Male Athlete of the Week and was named champion of his weight class at both the Ithaca College Invitational and the Roger Williams Invitational. He reached the finals and earned runner-up at the Doug Parker Invitational, Williams College Invitational and the New England Wrestling Association Championships.  He led the team with 74 dual points on the season and posted a team-high 33 wins with just six losses.

Edward, wrestling at 149, posted a strong sophomore campaign on the mat. The Criminal Justice major recorded 16 wins in 27 bouts, accumulating 30 takedowns along the way. He posted a 4-1 record at the New England Futures tournament Feb. 14, securing third place in the tournament. He also had strong showings at the RWU Invitational and Doug Parker Invitational, posting a 2-2 record at both.

The two helped the 2009-10 Hawks to a 29th national ranking at one point in the season and a tie for second-place overall in the competitive Pilgrim League. The team finished the season 13-7 in dual meets, marking its 14th consecutive winning season.
