GORHAM, Maine – The RWU Hawks Wrestling Team split its dual meets Sunday in Gorham, Maine, where they fell, 20-15, to No. 30 Rhode Island College before defeating the host University of Southern Maine, 19-17. USM upset RIC, 23-21, in the day’s third match.

The Hawks fist met Rhode Island College in a match that featured zero pins, but five major decision wins. After a major decision win by RWU senior Jeremiah Mahoney (Madison, Conn.) at 133, the Hawks found themselves ahead, 4-3. RIC responded, taking three-straight decisions, including two major decisions.

The Hawks stopped the RIC run with a major decision of their own as senior Kyle Rodgers (Danbury, Conn.) took the 165 bout, 18-4. Freshman Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) won a tight 184 bout, 5-4, and junior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) earned a 12-4 major decision victory setting up the heavyweight battle to decide the match with the score 17-15. In the end, RIC’s Brian Nicoll defeated RWU’s junior Bennett Kissane (Tranquility, N.J.), 3-1, for the final 20-15 win.

In the Hawks’ second match of the day, the final victor was again determined by the heavyweights with USM entering the bout ahead, 17-16. Regulation was not enough to decide a winner as Kissane and Travis Spencer were tied 2-2 through three periods. A take-down by Kissane in the first overtime gave RWU the 19-17 victory.

Rodgers earned a 16-2 major decision win earlier in the match, while Ernst and Cambi earned 2-1 and 6-2 wins, respectively.

RWU returns home for its final home match of the season, Wednesday, to face Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Bryant University, beginning at 6 p.m.
