Bristol, R.I. – The New England Wrestling Association announced its year-end awards following the conclusion of this weekend's NEWA Championships, naming Roger Williams and Worcester Polytechnic Institute co-winners of the NEWA Team Sportsmanship Award.
This marks the third time in the last nine years the Hawks have earned the award, including 2002 and 2007. The award is voted on by the mat officials, giving special recognition to the Hawk wrestlers and coaching staff for their positive conduct and attitude on and off the mat throughout the season.
“We take pride in how we represent Roger Williams and our Wrestling Program throughout the year,” Head Coach Dave Kemmy said. “It is a special honor for the team to earn recognition for their efforts in sportsmanship.”
The award comes at the conclusion of the Hawks' 2009-10 season - their 14th consecutive winning season. RWU ranked as high as 29th nationally this season, finishing with an overall record of 13-7 and tying for second place in the Pilgrim League with a record of 3-2.
