WALTHAM, Mass. - Roger Williams University senior Joseph Mello (Seekonk, Mass.) performed well at the NEISDA Championships this weekend held at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass. Mello took second on the one-meter board with 412.80 points and third on the three-meter board with 358.45 points.
Saturday’s one-meter board competition began with the preliminaries in which Mello qualified for the finals with a score of 412.80, ranking first among all divers. In the finals, UMass-Dartmouth senior Matt Fahey (New Bedford, Mass.) improved his prelim score from 383.35 to post an event high 427.20. Bentley junior All-America Jon Andrews (Southbury, Conn.) placed third with a score of 408.45.
In Sunday’s 3-meter board competition, Mello again posted a strong preliminary score of 357.10 – good for second place. In the finals he scored slightly higher at 358.45, securing third place behind UMass-Dartmouth freshman Nate O’Keffe (Taunton, Mass.) and Fahey. Fahey swept the event with a three-meter score of 396.26 and was named both the Men’s Diver of the Meet as well as Men’s Senior Diver of the Meet.
Mello’s performance gathered him and the Hawks 36 points, second only to the Corsairs. The points will carry over into next weekend’s swimming portion of the championships held in White River Junction, Vt.
