NEW LONDON, CONN. – Hawks junior Dillon Lawler (Vernona, N.J.) won by pin at 197 pounds with four seconds left to clinch the match as Roger Williams beat Coast Guard 29-15 in a Pilgrim Wrestling League match Wednesday night in New London, Conn.
The Hawks improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Pilgrim League while it was the first dual meet of the season for Coast Guard.
The match began with Coast Guard forfeiting the 125 pound bout while Roger Williams forfeited at 133 pounds.
At 141 it was a battle of the freshmen, as Coast Guard's Josh Gerry (Quincy, Mass.) beat James Higgins (Sewell, N.J.), 6-2, to give the Bears a 9-6 lead.
RWU junior Kevin Edward (Bayport, N.Y.) won 4-0 over sophomore Curtis Hayes (Maurice, Iowa) at 149 pounds to tie the match 9-9.
The back and forth scoring continued when Coast Guard senior Andy Snyder (Tamaqua, Pa.) won a 6-0 decision over junior Kyle D'Urso (Londonderry, N.H.) for a 12-9 lead before sophomore Michael Monson (Southington, Conn.) won by major decision, 12-2, over freshman Lucas Taylor (Greenville, Pa.) to give the Hawks a 13-12 lead.
In the 174 bout senior Will Stark (West Milford, N.J.) won a 6-2 decision over sophomore Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.) giving the Bears a 15-13 lead.
Roger Williams took the lead for good at 184 pounds when sophomore Philip Ernst (Succaunna, N.J.) won an 8-0 major decision over senior Greg Bredariol (Cranbury, N.J.) for a 17-15 edge.
Lawler pinned Coast Guard sophomore Max Walker (Traverse City, Mich.) at 6:56 to clinch the match before senior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.), ranked 2nd in New England, won by forfeit at heavyweight.
RWU looks to continue its winning ways Saturday when it travels to Springfield, Mass., to face American International College, Bridgewater State College and the University of Southern Maine in separate dual meets beginning at 12 Noon. Coast Guard will remain out of action until after the New Year when they compete in the North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus College, Saturday, Jan. 8.
