Sixth straight TCCC title for RWU Swimming & Diving

BRISTOL, R.I. –The Roger Williams Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving teams captured The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship for the sixth consecutive season with a dominating performance in the two-day invitational. The men won by a 270-point margin, while the women posted 543 points, 130 better than second place University of New England.

In the second day of competition, the women won every event in the morning session except for the 200 Yard Freestyle. Kristen Grandonica (Portland, Maine), #Sarah Mamula# (Madison, Conn.), #Erin Carlson# (Watertown, Conn.), and #Melly Marrington# (Farmington, Conn.) grabbed first in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:45.07 to begin the day. Grandonica and Marrington would team team up with #Ashley Kichline# (Souderton, Pa.) and #Caitlin O'Connor# (Wallingford, Conn.) later in the day to win the 400 Yard Medley Relay in 4:20.07.

The Hawks swept the top three spots in the 200 Yard IM, with freshman #Heather Beardsworth# (Dover, N.H.) leading the way (2:21.75), followed by O'Connor (2:22.12) and #Dorea DiMaggio# (West Allenhurst, N.J.) (2:28.13). Also earning a win for the Hawks was Kichline in the 100 Yard Backstroke, taking first in 1:04.25.

On the men's side, #Phillip Jacques# (Durham, Maine), #Eric Thurston# (Wallingford, Conn.), #Rob Husta# (Marlborough, Conn.), and #Peter Walerysiak# (Bristol, Conn.) took first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:43.93 in the opening event. Jacques later won the 100 Yard Backstroke in 56.21, more than five seconds better than runner-up.

Husta later took first in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 58:01, followed respectively by teammates #Zach Gillespie# (New Preston, Conn.) (58:26) and #Alex Hancock# (58:39). Also earning victories for the Hawks on the day were #Tim Ragan# (Topsfield, Mass.) in the 200 Yard Freestyle (1:50.48) and Phil Jacque in the 100 Yard Backstroke (56:21).

Highlighting the morning session for the Hawks was Andrew Rumore (Norwalk, Conn.), who broke the school record in the 1-Meter Dive with a score of 414.65, besting the previous mark of 405.75 which was previously held by Joe Mello.

The TCCC Invitational marks the final meet of the fall semester for Roger Williams. The Hawks will resume competition in January with a 1:00 p.m. dual meet at the University of New England on January 22.
