Thompson grabs second at Singlehanded Nationals in busy weekend for Sailing

BRISTOL, R.I. – This past weekend, the Roger Williams University Sailing team competed in four regattas, highlighted by a second-place performance by Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) at the ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championships in Tampa, Florida.

Thompson totaled 73 points on the weekend and earned a runner-up finish to Charlie Buckingham of Georgetown University by just four points. Thompson jumped out to a great start winning his first four races and compiling wins in eight of the first 13 races. Yet Buckingham also sailed well along with Thompson, as the two were tied after 16 races. In the penultimate race, Buckingham finished third while Thompson took 11th, trailing by eight going into the final race. Although Buckingham faltered and finished 15th, Thompson's 11th-place result was not enough to overtake the lead as Buckingham claimed the national championship.

In the Hap Moore Team race hosted by the US Coast Guard Academy the Hawks took third place out of the 12 teams competing. The Hawks went 11-5 in the round robin format and only finished behind the Boston College Eagles and the University of Vermont Catamounts.

At the Rhode Island State Championship, the Hawks took 8th place earning 134 points in the event. At A division was Andrew Tamblyn (Little Silver, N.J.) and Dan Goldman (Bradenton, Fla.), who took sixth place with 53 points. The duo finished with four top-five results including a win and runner-up in two races. In B Division, skipper Matthew Paige (Mystic. Conn.) and crew Megan Place (Wilton Manors, Fla.) finished with 81 points, garnering four top-ten results.

At the Freshmen Intersectional, the Hawks put two teams on the water, coming away with places of 16th and 17th place, earning 240 and 247 points respectively. Taking 16th were Alexander Rudkin (Middletown, R.I.) and Joshua Gershuny (Newburyport, Mass.) who grabbed four places in the top ten, highlighted with a fifth-place finish. On the second team, skipper Campbell Duffy (Warwick, Bermuda) and crew Alex Miller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) took 17th with their best race a seventh-place result in the tenth race.

Next weekend, Roger Williams closes out the fall season at the Atlantic Coast Championships next weekend at the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland.
