BRISTOL, R.I. – The RWU Wrestling team won its season-opener Saturday in decisive fashion, defeating the visiting Norwich Cadets 30-9. The Hawks took eight of the 10 bouts on the day.
Norwich jumped out to a 6-0 lead after Jonathan Lemoine (Trumbull, Conn.) lost by fall at 5:52 of the 125 bout, but RWU responded by winning the next seven-straight matches.
Freshman James Higgins (Sewell, N.J.) began the win streak at 133, taking a 5-2 victory before freshman Conor Hayes (Old Bridge, N.J.) earned a 6-1 win at 141. Hayes was one of four Hawks to hold his opponent to just one point or less as junior Kyle D'Urso (Londonderry, N.H.) earned a tight 3-1 win at 157 and sophomore Michael Monson (Southington, Conn.) won 11-1 at 165. Senior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) put an exclamation mark on the victory, shuting out his opponent 16-0 in the heavyweight match.
Senior Nicholas Herrick (Paramus, N.J.) and freshman Johann Roebelen (Windsor, Conn.) also earned wins for RWU by the scores of 11-3 and 5-3, respectively.
The Hawks return to action Saturday in the Monarch Invitational Tournament, hosted by Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The tournament begins at 10 a.m.
