ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The RWU wrestling team earned a split Saturday afternoon in Elizabethtown, Pa., where the Hawks fell to the host Blue Jays, 26-9, before defeating the University of Scranton, 47-0.
In the first match of the day RWU faced Elizabethtown College, beginning with fourth-in-the-nation Tyler Erdman (Herndon, Pa.) earning a 17-2 win over RWU’s Jonathan Lemoine (Trumbull, Conn.). The Blue Jays extended their lead to 17-0 before Kyle Rodgers (Danbury, Conn.) put RWU on the board with a win by fall at 3:10 over sophomore Kyle Deeds (Leesport, Pa.) in the 165 bout.
After another Blue Jays decision, RWU freshman Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) posted a 4-3 win over senior Paul Connor (Tabernacle, N.J.) at 184. It would be the last points for RWU as junior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) was upset by junior Bill Meaney (Toms River, N.J.) at 197 and Bennett Kissane (Tranquility, N.J.) fell, 5-3, to Deron Sharp (Millville, N.J.) in the heavyweight match.
RWU rebounded in its second match of the day, defeating the University of Scranton, 47-0. The match featured five pins for the Hawks and two major decisions. Kissane put an exclamation point on the victory needing just 36 seconds to pin his heavyweight opponent and complete the shutout for RWU.
RWU returns to the mat Friday, Jan. 15, in Middletown, Conn., facing Wesleyan University and Trinity College in back-to-back dual matches beginning at 4 p.m.
