BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University freshman Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) was named New England Wrestling Association Rookie Wrestler of the Week after his undefeated performance Sunday in the NEWA Duals.
Wrestling at 184, Ernst posted a perfect 4-0 record on the day, leading the Hawks to a sixth place finish in the 15-team tournament. Ernst began the day with a win by fall over Matt Hansen at 4:44 putting any comeback attempt out of reach for Western New England, as the Hawks went on to win the match, 33-16.
In the team’s next match against third-seed Wesleyan University, Ernst was one of three Hawks to earn a win, taking a 9-4 decision over his opponent. In his next bout, Ernst squared off with the University of Southern Maine’s James LaMarca and won, 6-4, helping RWU to the 30-16 win.
He completed his undefeated performance by recording a 9-0 major decision victory over Jeremy Burns of Springfield College.
Ernst and the Hawks return to the mat Wednesday when they travel to Bridgewater State College for a Pilgrim League contest beginning at 5 p.m.
