SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team claimed sixth place at the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship, with Matthew Duggan (Sandwich, Mass.), Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands), Maria Petrillo (Bristol, R.I.), and Kaytlin Hall (Los Angeles, Calif.)
were each recognized as All-Americans.
The final day of the championships concluded with four races sailed on Wednesday. Jonathan Enright (Bristol, R.I.) and Kelly Gorman (Marblehead, Mass.) sailed all four races in A Division for the Hawks, with their best finish a 14th-place result in the final race. In the end, RWU took 17th in the division. In B Division, Thompson and Hall had their best day on the water of the championships, winning the second and third races, and placing third in the first and last race. The final push was enough to bump them up to third place in B Division.
St. Mary's College earned the championship, pulling away from second-place Yale University with a 20-point win.
At the conclusion of the championships, the ICSA announced their All-American teams, with four Hawks earning a place among the best collegiate sailors in the country. Duggan and Thompson were named All-American Coed Skippers, while Petrillo and Hall were All-American Coed Crew. Thompson, Petrillo, and Hall each earned the distinction for the first time in their career, while this marks the second straight year for Duggan as an All-American.
The sixth-place finish concludes the 2008-09 season for Roger Williams University.
