Hawks Swimming and Diving edged by Trinity

BRISTOL, R.I.- The RWU men's and women's swimming and diving teams both suffered close losses at Trinity College, Saturday, 159-131 and 158-131, respectively.

 

Both the men's and the women's teams won each of their respective relays, finishing the 200 Yard Medley at 1:44.05 and 2:00.5 and taking the 400 Freestyle Relay at 3:29.56 and 4:01.48.

 

Junior Joseph Mello (Seekonk, Mass.) set school records on both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter diving boards, taking first in the 1-Meter with a score of 253.43 and placing second in the 3-Meter with a score of 245.55.

 

Freshman Mike Carlucci (Danbury, Conn.) registered three first-place finishes on the day, including two new school records. In the 100 Yard Backstroke he broke his own previous record with a time of 55.98 and in the 200 Yard Individual Medley he also beat his own record-setting time, touching the wall at 2:05.29. He also placed first in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:02.31.

 

On the women's side, freshman Ursula Nickerson (Torrington, Conn.) took first in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:11.97 and also finished third in both the 100 Yard Freestyle (59.49) and 100 Yard Butterfly (1:06.16).

 

Senior Jill Mackey (Redding, Conn.) was just 0.07 shy of setting a new school record as she placed first in the 50 Yard Freestyle.

 

Both teams are off until the NEISDA Championships later this month. The women's championship is at UMass-Dartmouth, Feb. 20-22 and the men's championship is hosted at RWU, Feb. 27-Mar. 1.
