Wrestling posts perfect weekend

BRISTOL, R.I. – The RWU wrestling team posted a perfect 3-0 record Saturday afternoon defeating visiting Bridgewater State College, 26-13, University of Southern Maine, 36-12 and American International College, 24-18.

The Hawks were helped by a 6-0 lead in each match after freshman Kaare Stokdal (Olive Bridge, N.Y.) gathered 18 points in his three victories at the 125 weight class. He jump started the Hawks' day with an opening match pin over Bridgewater State's Dan Palmer at :43 of the first period. He earned a forfeit win over USM and pinned AIC's Josh Rollins at 1:24 of the first period.

Junior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.), wrestling at 197, also posted three wins on the day, including two major decisions and one win by fall. He outscored his first two opponents 33-5 before pinning AIC's C.J. Chaika at 3:30.

RWU heavyweight  Bennett Kissane (Tranquility, N.J.) went undefeated on the day, posting a 3-0 decision over BSC's Samuel Fritz , a medical forfeit win over USM's Ryan Stanton and an important 6-4 decision over AIC's Casey Hines. In an exciting finish to the day, the Hawks found themselves down to AIC, 18-15, with just two bouts remaining. A pin by Cambi gave RWU the three-point lead, leaving Kissane to finish the day strong for RWU.

Junior Nicholas Herrick (Paramus, N.J.)  began the day needing just 54 seconds to pin his Bridgewater State opponent and later earned another win by fall in the USM match, this one in 2:30. The quad-captain could not complete a 3-0 sweep on the day, falling to a strong Sam Gauvine from AIC, 11-6, in the day's final match.

Sophomore Martin Mitchell (Laurel, Md.) also earned two victories in the day's first two matches, but fell in the final match in a close decision, 13-11, to AIC freshman Chris Hoffman.

Senior Kyle Rodgers (Danbury, Conn.) went 2-0 on the day, winning 3-1 in the team's first match and winning 4-2 in the team's last match.

On the day, RWU finished 3-0, Bridgewater State went 2-1, AIC finished 1-2 and Southern Maine ended 0-3.

The Hawks return to action after the New Year when they travel to Williamstown, Mass., to compete in the Williams College Invitational, beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 5.
