BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women’s Basketball team came away with their second win of the season on Tuesday night as they defeated the visiting Lasers from Lasell College by a final score of 53-51. The Hawks held a two point lead at halftime, and then had a key stop in the final seconds of the game to seal the victory.
Both teams shared the lead throughout the game. The Lasers held an early 13-5 lead, but the home team battled back to take the lead at half, 27-25. The Hawks would try and pull away several times but the Lasers hung in there and responded each time to stay within reach. After the visitors took a small lead, Roger Williams battled back and took the lead in the waning seconds of the game. On the last play of the game Reegan Brackett (Scarborough, Maine) attempted to drive to the bucket and lost the ball. On the loose ball Katie Farr (Rindge, N.H.) regained control and threw up a desperation shot that missed and effectively ended the game in the Hawks favor.
Roger Williams was paced by an 11 point performance from Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) which also included three assists and two rebounds. Junior Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) pitched in with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals, and Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) also contributed with nine points and six rebounds. Controlling the boards was Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) who pulled down eight boards for the home team. Leading the way for the visitors was Tricia Culver (Northampton, Mass.) who scored a game high 18 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Teammate Kim Archibald (Lewiston, Maine) pulled down nine rebounds while Kelsey Converse (Laconia, N.H.) put up nine points and added seven assists.
With the loss the Lasers drop to 0-5 while the Hawks get their second win of the season and improve to 2-4. The Lasers will next be playing Wheelock at Home on December 5th. Roger Williams will be traveling to Johnson & Wales University in Providence on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. game.
