Three From Sailing Earn NEISA Coed Sailor of the Week Honors

BRISTOL, R.I. - Three members of the Roger Williams University Sailing team have been named the NEISA Coed Sailors of the Week.  Junior Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands), Sophomore Kelly Stannard (Salem, Conn.) and Freshman John Bankert (Annapolis, Md.) received the recognition after their performance at the 68th Erwin Schell Trophy over the weekend.

The trio performed very well at the event, as they recorded five first place finishes and a total of 14 finishes in the top five, en route to winning the “A” Division and leading the team to a second place finish in the regatta.  With the strong finish, the team qualified for the NEISA Intercollegiate Atlantic Coast Championship which will be hosted by Harvard on November 14th and 15th.  This is Thompson and Stannard's second time being named NEISA Sailors of the Week and Bankert's first this season.

This weekend Thompson and teammate Luke Lawrence (Palm City, Fla.) are competing for the ICSA Singlehanded Men's National Championship in Corpus Christi, Texas.  Last year, Thompson won the event and is looking to defend his title against some stiff competition.  The team will also be racing at the Hap Moore Trophy and Freshman Intersectional which both will be in Boston, Mass., The Rhode Island State Championships at Salve Regina in Newport, R.I., and the No-Ringer Invite and Crews Regatta which are both in Cambridge, Mass.
