Wrestling 8th at Doug Parker Invitational
Phil Ernst went 6-1 to place third Saturday at 184
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wrestling Team placed eighth out of 18 teams Saturday at the annual Doug Parker Invitational Tournament held at Springfield College. Four Hawks placed among the top six, including three freshmen – marking the most freshmen RWU has ever placed in the tournament.
Wrestling in his first-ever collegiate tournament, RWU freshman Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) dropped a tight 7-5 decision before rattling off six-straight wins to take third place at 184.
Fellow freshman Kaare Stokdal (Olive Bridge, N.Y.) also wrestled well in the 125 weight class, placing for the first time in his career. Stokdal posted a 5-3 record, including a win by fall, to take sixth place.
At 157, freshman Michael Monson (Southington, Conn.) won his first three bouts before falling to the eventual champion of the weight class. He moved on to take sixth place overall, marking the third-straight tournament in which he placed.
The fourth Hawk to place Saturday was nationally-ranked Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) wrestling at 197. Cambi won three-straight matches to reach the finals, including a 7-3 win over 2009 All-American Joe Silverman of MIT. In the finals he met the defending national runner-up Ryan Malo from Williams and fell behind 4-2 before getting pinned in the third period.
