EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite not being able to play on the team’s home court, the Roger Williams University Women’s Tennis team still managed to defeat Gordon College by an 8-1 score Friday evening.
With the rainy weather throughout the day affecting the home court for Roger Williams, the Hawks were forced to move the match to Center Courts in East Providence, Rhode Island. After already having the original match date rescheduled from last Saturday, both teams had to get the match in with The Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament approaching next week.
The Hawks swept all three doubles matches, with Leah Ribchinsky (Ivoryton, Conn.) and Caitlin Osepchuk (Ocean Grove, N.J.) defeating Kate Kirby (Orono, Maine) and Andrea Metayer (Bedford, N.H.) 8-1. Tracy Klein (New City, N.Y.) and Amanda Wolfe (Mansfield, Mass.) followed suit with a 8-3 win over Kallie Garrett (Bend, Ore.) and Hannah Osgood (Rochester, N.H.). In the final match, Katelin Richard (West Islip, N.Y.) and Kristin Dono (West Boylston, Conn.) wrapped up the doubles sweep with the 8-5 win over Jessica Greenwood (Bethel, Conn.) and Sarah Emmons (Washington, N.J.)
In singles play, the Hawks took five of the six matches, with Osgood recording the lone win for Gordon with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Melissa Perry (Bristol, R.I.) at #5. Ribchinsky earned a 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 win over Kirby in #1 singles, while Klein defeated Metayer at #2 in straight sets without dropping a single game. Wolfe took Garrett 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) at #3 with Osepchuk getting the 6-2, 6-0 win at #4. Olivia Hilton (Vernon, Conn.) recorded the fifth singles win for RWU by defeating Sarah Pitts 6-1, 6-0 at #6.
Roger Williams (7-5, 7-3 TCCC) wraps up the regular season tomorrow at home against Regis College at 1:00 p.m., while Gordon (5-7, 5-5 TCCC) hosts Emerson tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
