BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women’s Rugby Club lost an entertaining match to the Lady Rams of URI 20-7, in a key Division III contest that many observers felt was a lot closer than the score indicated.
“It was like night and day from the Coast Guard match,” said Head Coach Tom Campbell. “We pushed URI all over the field, and except for a couple of missed tackles, we were the dominant team today.”
Three times the Hawks were within five yards of scoring, but failed to cross the goal line. Roger Williams won most of its scrums and lineouts, Captains Alison Littleton (Woburn, Mass.) and Stephanie Watson (Reading, Mass.) advanced the ball time and again, center Brittany Gallin (Glen Rock, N.J.) and 2nd row Erin O’Connell tackled relentlessly, and rookie Jenny Schermerhorn (Sherborn, Mass.) notched a beautiful try, scoring from 30 yards out.
“Our rookies are gaining experience, and it really showed today,” said Coach Campbell. “Keeping in mind, this is only the second game some of these girls have ever played, they are making great progress.”
Next up for the Hawks: Last year’s DIV National Champions Holy Cross.
