BRISTOL, R.I. – Head Coach Neil Caniga has named Kyle Baker (Bolton, Conn.) and Leah Ribchinsky (Ivoryton, Conn.) to be the captains of the Roger Williams University Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams for the 2009-10 season. Baker, a senior has accumulated an overall record of 40-19 in singles and 22-12 in doubles over his three years here. Ribchinsky, a junior, has compiled a record of 22-29 in singles and 27-25 in doubles competition.
Baker enters into his fourth year as a senior and looks to continue having success on the tennis courts. He has shown coach Caniga that his effort and desire to win are at the highest level, and is an example to the rest of his team. Baker has done well each year, with a record of 12-6 in 2006-07, was 14-4 overall in 2007-08, and 12-9 in 2008-09. So far this season, he has posted a record of 2-2. Baker has also done well in doubles, having a record of 8-9 in 2007-08, and improving dramatically to 12-2 in 2008-09. So far this season he is 2-1 in doubles.
Ribchinsky is in her third year of playing as a junior. She has also proven herself as a leader with her work ethic and enthusiasm. In the 2007-08 season, she had an overall singles record of 8-11, while in 2008-09 she went 9-13. Thus far this season, she is even at 5-5. In doubles competition, she went 14-6 in 2007-08, 8-14 in 2008-09, and is 5-5 so far this season. Last year, she played the entire season at #1 singles, and has continued doing the same so far this season.
The Men’s Tennis team just wrapped up the fall season, going 2-2 and will resume play in the springtime. Ribchinsky and the Women’s Tennis team return to action Friday against Gordon and again on Saturday against Regis before the TCCC playoffs begin.
