Pair of Wins Highlights Busy Weekend for Sailing Team

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Sailing Team had a jam-packed weekend, competing in five regattas on Saturday and Sunday.  The team was victorious in both the Ross Trophy and Central Series Four events, as well as a 3rd place, 7th place, and 8th place finishes in the Smith Trophy, the Women's Regis Bowl, and the Danmark Trophy.

The Courageous Sailing Center in Charlestown, Massachusetts was the site of the Richard Ross Trophy, held in memory of Richard Ross who was a passenger on Flight 11 during 9/11.  Saturday's weather was rainy with a steady, light Southeast breeze of 5-10 knots that helped propel the team of Tucker Blagden (Marblehead, Mass.) and Andrew Vachon (Scituate, Mass.) to victory over twenty other teams competing.  Six races were held with one drop race allowed, and the duo was able to win three of the heats and place 2nd and 4th in the other two to finish with 9 points, and the win.

The second regatta on the weekend for the Hawks was the Central Series Four hosted by Tufts University.  Roger Williams fielded two teams on the weekend, with racers in both the A and B Divsions.  Eight total races were held, seven on Sunday under rainy skies and a steady breeze of 5-10 knots to the Southeast, and one on Sunday in a very light Northerly wind.  Both of RWU's teams did well, with Team One winning the event with 73 total points and Team Two finishing in fourth place with 141 points behind Tufts Team One and Boston University.  George Saunders (San Diego, Calif.) and Rob Devens (Niantic, Conn.) were racing for RWU Team Two in the A division, and were the overall winners as they finished in the top three in six of the eight races, and never fell below sixth place.  The Team One, A Division representatives were Bjarki Gunnarsson (River Vale, N.J.) and Carleton Huntsberger (North Port, Maine), who finished in third overall.  The pair got off to a fairly slow start and were in the middle of the pack but finished strong, having five top-four finishes in the final five races.  Team One's B Division squad of Ryan McHorney (Southboro, Mass.) and Fritz Stunzi (Marblehead, Mass.) was consistent, placing as high as second and not falling below eighth in any of the races, good enough for fifth overall.  The Team Two, B Division racers were Samy Ramadan (Newfields, N.H.), Andrew Tamblyn (Little Silver, N.J.) for the first seven races, and Cameron Pimentel (Paget, Bermuda) for the eighth and final race.  The trio finished 16th overall and helped secure fourth place on the weekend for Team Two.

The third event on the weekend for the team was the Smith Trophy hosted by MIT that honors Professor George Warren Smith.  Saturday saw rainy conditions with a 4-8 knot Southeast wind, and allowed for seven races in the A Division and nine in the B Division.  On Sunday the races were cancelled due to a severe lack of wind.  Overall the Hawks placed third with 125 points, behind Central Connecticut and URI.  Luke Lawrence (Palm City, Fla.) and Alyssa Seifert (Duxbury, Mass.) raced in the A Division and placed 9th overall in that division.  Lawrence and Seifert stayed right in the middle of the pack, with two races finishing in the top five.  Alec Anderson (Tortola, BVI) and John Bankert (Annapolis, Md.) won the B Division with 51 points, having started with two tenth place finishes but never fell below sixth in the next seven races to help out the team.

In another event, the Women's Regis Bowl hosted by Boston University, the Hawks had racers in the A and B Divisions, and finished in 7th place with 241 points.  Twelve races were held during the weekend with rain and 5-10 knot winds on Saturday, and very light winds of 0-5 knots on Sunday.  The first team consisted of Haley Powell (St. George, Bermuda) and Bianca Rom (Amityville, N.Y.).  Powell and Rom placed 5th overall and earned 65 points, only falling out of the top-ten in two of the races held.  The second team was made up of Emerald Epke (Tiverton, R.I.) and Sophie Bellacosa (Winchester, Mass.).  The pair finished in 18th place and contributed 176 points to the overall score for the team.

The fifth and final regatta on the weekend was the Danmark Trophy hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  On Saturday there was South-Southeast winds of 5-12 knots as well as consistent rain and some Thunder Storms which provided for an extended lunch break.  Sunday's weather was nice and there was a 6-8 knot Northerly wind.  There were 15 races held in both A and B Divisions over the weekend.  Roger Williams finished in 8th place out of the 20 that participated.  Cy Thompson (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) and Adrienne White (Duxbury, Mass.) raced in the A Division and finished in 6th place with 134 points.  Thompson and White won one of the races, and finished in the top-five in seven of the 15 races held.  Three members of the Hawks made up the B Division, Sean Bouchard (Bermuda), Kelly Stannard (Salem, Conn.) and Tyler Wilson (Woodville, Mass.).  They were able to finish in 9th place overall with 160 points, behind a strong showing with two victories, and eight top-ten finishes.

The Hawks have another busy upcoming weekend of regattas.  They race at the Moody Trophy in FJ's in Kingston R.I on Saturday and Sunday, as well as the Protest Trophy for the Southern Series Five in FJ's at the Coast Guard Academy, and the Women's Captains Cup for match racing at Tufts in Larks on Sunday.  In addition, RWU will be hosting the NE Men's Singlehanded Championships in BYO Lasers, which will be held on both Saturday and Sunday with a scheduled start time of 9:30 am.
