BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams Women's Swimming and Diving team fell at the hands of Wheaton College on Wednesday evening by a score of 175.5-121.5. The loss is the second in a row in a very young season for the Hawks.
The loss was not due to lack of effort, as several school records were broken during the meet. The first of which was the 400-yd Medley relay team consisting of Ashley Kichline (Souderton, Pa.), Ursula Nickerson (Torrington, Conn.), Melly Marrington (Farmington, Conn.), and Caitlin O'Connor (Wallingford, Conn.). The four swimmers finished the event in a time of 4:19.37 to get the win and the new record. Marrington would also break the school record as she tied for the win in a time of 28.43. Kichline would break her second school record in the 200-yd Backstroke as she took second with a time of 2:21.98. She also won the 50-yd Backstroke event and place second in the 200-yd event. Marrington and O'Connor went first and second in the 100-yd Freestyle, and Nickerson and O'Connor would place second and third in the 200-yd Individual Medley as well. Nickerson would also place second in the 200-yd Breaststroke.
In the 1000-yd Freestyle event the Hawks took second and third. Brigid Houlihan (Nahant, Mass.) took second in a time of 11:46.22 while teammate Marissa Carr (Arlington, Mass.) finished in third with a time of 11:48.33. Houlihan also placed third in the 500-yd Freestyle event. The team of Houlihan, Olivia Matthes (West Islip, N.Y.), Sarah Mamula (Madison, Conn.) and Casey Meagher (Billerica, Mass.) would take second in the 200-yd Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:49.51 just behind the team from Wheaton that finished in 1:49.40. The Hawks would also place second and third in the 200-yd Butterfly as Joanna Tchobanova (Brewster, N.Y.) came in second and Jacqui Cohen (Commack, N.Y.) finished in third. Also going second and third in the 200-yd Freestyle were O'Connor and Houlihan, respectively.
In the one meter diving event Laura Folsom (Simsbury, Conn.) took second with a score of 189.08 while teammate Kelly Meacham (Southington, Conn.) finished in fifth with a score of 136.35.
The Women's Swimming and Diving team gets back in the water on Saturday when they will travel to TCCC opponent Regis College in Weston, Mass. at noon.
