BRISTOL, R.I. - Roger Williams University's Maria Petrillo (Mystic, Conn.) has been named to the 2009 ICSA All-Academic Sailing First team. The History major who graduated this past May maintained an overall GPA of 3.79 in her four years at RWU.
The ICSA All-Academic team is comprised of ten student-athletes on the first team, and ten on the second. To be eligible for the honor, the student-athlete must be in his/her junior or senior year, and have maintained a GPA of 3.50 or above. Also, the individual must be a key starter or reserve member on their institution's sailing team.
Being named to the ICSA All-Academic team is an honor bestowed to those that are able to maintain a balance between performing well academically while also participating in competitive sailing. Being named to the First Team is recognition of the focus on high academic achievement by Petrillo.
Petrillo was an integral member of the Sailing team, participating in a number of races as well as being named All-American Coed Crew, and receiving All-New England Crew honors as well. She is the first member of the RWU Sailing team to receive All-Academic Honors.
