DANBURY, Conn. - The Roger Williams University Women’s Rugby Club won a thriller over Western Connecticut State University 26-24, as a furious assault on the goal line led to the go ahead score with virtually no time left.
Down 14-0 early, the Hawks stormed back, and scores by wing Dayna Smith and flanker Alison Littleton tied the match at 14 by halftime. The secon half was a see-saw battle, with center Brittany Gallin stealing a pass and returning it 40 yards for a go-ahead score. Again, WCSU came right back and scored what appeared to be the winning try with two minutes remaining.
Yet the Hawks kicked off deep, bottled up WCSU 20 yards from the goal line, and after RWU won several rucks, center Brittany Vail broke towards the right corner, passing to winger Liz Futoma for the winning score. Number 8 Jenny Schermerhorn contributed three conversion kicks for another six points.
The win evens the Hawks’ record at 2-2; their next match is Saturday in Hartford against Trinity.
