Men's Rugby opens season with win
NORTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men’s Rugby team opened its season on a high note Sunday afternoon with a 25 – 0 victory over conference opponent Wheaton College.
Though playing most of the first half in the opposition’s end of the field, Roger Williams was only able to score five points, taking a lead into halftime. Many turnovers and costly penalties repeatedly prevented RWU from scoring from just outside of the Wheaton Try Zone.
At halftime, adjustments were made and Roger Williams quickly scored two tries, bringing the score to 15-0. The Roger Williams forwards played well, controlling the ball and winning the set pieces. Defensively, the Hawks were able to keep Wheaton unproductive with their offensive sets throughout the game. The Lyons were unable to drive into the RWU half for most of the game. RWU scored an additional try with 15 minutes remaining and converted a penalty goal with 7 minutes remaining to bring the final score to 25 – 0.
The Hawks will host the University of Massachusetts- Dartmouth Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
