NEWPORT, R.I. – With the conclusion of the ICSA/Gill National Championship, the Roger Williams University Sailing team came away with a fourth place showing in the field of 18.
Six races were able to be held despite the wet conditions due to the ongoing rain, with a solid breeze throughout the day.
In the A division, the Hawks earned top-ten finishes in each of their six races, including a third-place showing in the second-to-last race of the day. The squad, consisting of #
Kaytlin Hall# (Los Angeles, Calif.), #Andrew Goetting# (Point Pleasant, N.J.), and
#Kelly Gorman# (Marblehead, Mass.), finished third overall among all A division competitors with 140 points. The Hawk trio came just seven points shy of the overall points leader in the division.
#Matt Duggan# (Sandwich, Mass.), #Maria Petrillo# (Mystic, Conn.), and
#Sarah Mease# (Ocean Gate, N.J.) each continued their solid sailing inthe B division, picking up top-ten finishes in five of six races. Among those finishes included a win by Duggan and Mease in the penultimate race of the championship. The three sailors improved upon their standings within the division on each day, ending with 149 points and a sixth-place performance for the entire championship.
Georgetown University took the lead on the final day to come away with the championship.
The Hawks' fourth-place performance in the national championship brings the 2007-08 campaign to a close, as the team will gear up for next season.
